So here we are! And boy, are they gonna change the game. Having never dealt with Set actions, this week was a great challenge.
So while I struggled to understand the concept I was able to read a couple blogs as well as reverse engineered a couple workbooks in order to reproduce the challenge and more importantly LEARN how to do things. For learning purposes, I like to name my calculated fields in order so that when I or someone else references this workbook it will be easier to reverse engineer. This is something that picked up from Luke Stanke.
The first thing I did was create an empty set based on the highlest level of drill, [Category] in this case. Next we need to create the first of two dynamic dimension fields.
They are going to be dual purpose. They will be use label and in tooltips as well as adding the proper level of detail to our treemap.
We essentially want to start at [Category]if we drill once, we want see [Sub-category] and if we drill again, we want to see the [Product]. This is why we created our first set as empty. Next we need to create the dyamic field that will return either the [Sub-category] or [Product] name.
This will look at each set and test for members IN is true then Product else it will fall to the previous dynamic field. I would go straight from Category to Product. And nobody wants that. Every time. Are picking up on the pattern? Like I said up top, I think set actions and the forth coming parameter actions currently in This community is pretty awesome and I encourage you to go check out what else has been done with set actions.

For an introduction on how to bring powerful new comparisons to viz audiences with set actions, read more here.
Set actions make interactivity more expressive, providing precise control on dashboard design without any programming. They enable users to design a variety of custom responses to end user interactions. Interaction with a visualisation is often equated with filtering, but filtering is just one type of response to user selections.
Sometimes you may want to:. While filters only keep data that is in a selection, sets group data into two groups—in or out of a selection. In fact, filters are a just special type of set. In principle, sets can express anything that filters can express, but the reverse is not true. The set action feature means that end user selections in a visualisation can be stored in a set. Since sets can be nested or used in calculations, authors can design more expressive interaction behaviours, such as OR filters and filtering on relationships.
This opens up solutions to problems like market basket analysis. In the videos shared below, I'll be demonstrating end-to-end user flows with specific scenarios that you may encounter, such as filtering on relationships, sorting and aligning on a selection, OR filters, dynamic grouping, and computing table calculations. You can follow along using the data sources here and bulk download the workbooks here.
Concept: Some data encodes meaning, while other data encodes relationships. Humans make selections from the type of data that encodes meaning. For example, a user is much more likely to ask, "Which teams were part of Brazil's group in the World Cup? While filters always select the value the user picked, sets can select other fields based on their relationship to the user selection.
Data Source: World Cup Match Results Scenario: For a selected team, how many games did they play and to whom did they win, lose, or draw? How many goals did each team score and how many goals were scored against them?I am looking to make my dashboard more interactive.
Is it possible to create a dashboard and have the option to click into a graph. Main graph showing overall result by month, then click on it and a new graph or two graphs will open with more specific detail showing current month Business Unit or Product result? This is standard Filter Action functionality.
You tell the Action which Field s from "this-sheet" should be used to govern the filter of "that-sheet". The sheets can be from the same dashboard, or from different dashboards.
User selects a Continent on Dashboard 1. In the tooltips is a "link" looks like a hyperlink. By default Tableau called mine "Filter1". User is sent to Dashboard 2. The sheet on that screen shows total profits by year for the selected continent.
And is it possible to link to two graphs on the second dashboard? Filter Actions Tableau Software. From there you select a "source" sheet, and a target sheet, and if you want a field from the source to populate the target, you select the filter button near the bottom and then hit ADD FILTER, and you'll get another dialog box that lets you identify the source field and the target field.
The value from the source field will be used to populate the target field. Often, if you are using only one data source, the field names will be the same.
You can iteratively add more than one filter field if you want the target sheet to be governed by multiple fields from the source sheet. I like the reply you have given for moving from one dashboard to another, my requirement is little bit similar with addon. In my case, when a user clicks on a bar chart1, it should give 3 hyperlinks option to the user as you have explained abovebased on user selection respective bar chart2 should open.
Now I want to know. How that Hyperlink Filter1 has been achieved, I couldn't find out from the. Can we change its name? Is it possible to include more than 1 such filters in the tooltip, as per my requirement that I explained? Zeenat -- In my last reply to this thread I gave links that discuss how to make action filters. I also described how to do them. You can add as many as you want.Drill Up are very useful when working with more than three levels of hierarchy.
How to Drill into a Single Row of a Text Table in Tableau
As Parameter Actions are going to be used, the first thing we must do is define the Parameters to be used. Initially, the parameters are assigned the value of an empty string, but as the user interacts with the Viz, the Parameter Actions will update the value of its associated parameter.
With the update of the parameter values, the value of this field will automatically be recalculated. Its value will depend on the level of consultation or detail used. Create a Parameter Action for each level of Drill Down. The latest version of the Viz is here.

As the Drill Down option is used, that is, when the hierarchy consultation levels are deepened, options must be added within a top menu bar, which allows you to return to any of the previous levels of aggregation. On the other hand, when a Drill Up option is activated in the menu bar, the main chart is updated and in addition, the available menu options are updated, according to the selected Drill Up level. Then I share the steps I followed.Yet it is a common request by stakeholders in the business world.
The main argument against displaying data in a table is the inability to quickly and accurately tell the difference between values, especially when there are lots of different numbers.
One way to present data in a table like manner yet still incorporate visual cues is to show light grey bar charts behind each number when a dimension is expanded. This can be accomplished in Tableau through utilizing set actions and formatting of subtotals. In this example, I even highlighted the bars with a negative profit ratio orange. In the latest Power BI update, a new feature was introduced to allow for the ability to drill in and out of different items.
I wanted to see if something similar could be created in Tableau. An important note: because this calculation uses LODs, it may need to be adjusted depending on how your table is setup and the desired look. Add it to the rows shelf, in front of category. Right click on the category pill and unselect show header. If you add multiple measures, there will not be much space in-between the different columns.
To easily add additional space, edit the label. Add two periods to the end of the label and change the color to white If you want to color the bars of any of the measures, such as if there was a threshold for a good, bad, and okay profit ratio, a calculation can be created and added to the detail mark.
Then, clicking on the icon next to the pill, change it to color. This will bring up a combined legend, where the total values can be changed to white while the others can be updated accordingly To view my working example on Tableau Public or to download my workbook, click here.

I am going to use category as the main dimension and sub-category as the secondary dimension. Create a new worksheet and add the main dimension, category, to the columns shelf Create a new set based upon the main dimension.
This calculation will tell Tableau what to do when a value from the main dimension is clicked on and thus added to the set.I need a drill down functionality in map. When user clicks on country, data should be expanded to show the details at state level.
I have created actions: Country to State, Country to country, state to state and State to City which filter the required data. If I click on country data, state data is also displayed and on clicking state data, city data is also displayed. Now, I want, when I click on country data, state data is displayed as expected but country data is hidden.
Find my approach as reference below and stored in attached workbook version Personally, I would create two maps, one with the state filled map and another map with all the counties included. Then, create an action that takes the user from the first map to the second map, zoomed to the state selected.
Matt Lutton proposed the following:. Here's some help: Sheet Selection on Steroids. Tableau Community Forums Knowledge Base. If you see a Helpful or Correct response, please mark it thanks to the buttons below the targeted post! Instead, I want that only state is displayed when I click on country currently country and state are displayed. Also, on clicking data in state, only city sheet should be displayed currently state and city- both are displayed.
Please enter a title. You can not post a blank message. Please type your message and try again. Subsequently, when user clicks on state, data should be expanded to show city level details. But I want to provide this feature by clicking on the regions of map. So, I have created three sheets: Country, State, City and added them to dashboard. Similarly, on clicking state data, only city data is shown.
Attached is my workbook. This content has been marked as final. Show 6 replies. Regards, Norbert. Let me know if you need further assistance. He suggested that a way to make hierarchy controls more inviting would be to link the actions to buttons on your dashboard, essentially providing website-style navigation.
The idea is that we want to set up multiple dashboards, each showing different amount of levels in the hierarchy. Sort of like a flick-book. STEP 1: Set up different levels of the hierarchy in different dashboards. Using the Superstore dataset as an example, I have set up 4 different worksheets, each having one more level of granularity than the previous:.
Double click at the bottom of the marks card shelf. Write the text you want to appear on the button directly onto the shelf in quotation marks so Tableau recognizes it as a string. It will appear on the view in a single cell. Open a new dashboard and drag the Level 1 worksheet onto the canvas. Lets create our Level 2 view by duplicating the first dashboard. Now drag your Level 2 worksheet alongside the Level 1 table, before deleting it.
Repeat this process for all remaining Levels. Move back to your Level 1 view dashboard. Meanwhile, on the Level 3 view dashboard the highest level of granularity we only need to program a navigation back to the Level 2 dashboard.
Is this possible to implement with two different hierarchies? My problem is on a specific dimensional hierarchy as well as a date hierarchy. Would I need a sheets and dashboards for every permutation? Your email address will not be published.
